Retail Data

In recent research, pear data for July-October was pulled for 16 chains, and evaluated (chain by chain) based on promotion activity, overall sales results and contribution to the produce department. The chains were divided into five groups:

  • High frequency summer promoters (3 or more promotions during July & Aug)
  • Low frequency summer promoters (2 or less promotions during July & Aug)
  • High frequency peak season promoters (3 or more promotions during Sept & Oct)
  • Low frequency peak season promoters (2 or less promotions during Sept & Oct)
  • Super Group (2 or more promotions during summer and peak season, with at least 3 of those promotions discounted by 15% or more off everyday price).

Here are the Key Findings

  • Chains that promoted at least 3 times during summer sold an average of 180 lbs. of pears per week per store — 65% higher than chains that promoted less frequently.
  • Chains that promoted more frequently during summer averaged $195 per week per store — 34% higher than chains that promoted less often.
  • Chains that promoted at least 3 times during peak season sold an average of 321 lbs. of pears per week per store — 61% higher than chains that promoted less frequently.
  • Chains that promoted more frequently during peak season averaged $386 per week per store — 46% higher than chains in the low frequency group.

Remember: Bartletts aren’t available year-round, so start promoting them early and sell them strong while you have them!
