As summer comes to a close and September approaches, the Sacramento community moves into full Farm-to-Fork mode.
It is also a time at which we remind everyone that local, sustainably-grown California pears are still in peak season! We think you’ll agree that sweet, juicy pears make an easy transition from summer fruit to fall comfort food.
While California pears are still abundant and available to local grocery store and restaurants buyers, this is the time of year when Northwest pear farmers are in full harvest in the states of Oregon and Washington. This production area represents the greatest competition for California pear farming families –primarily because they are a much larger producer of pears and Northwest pears are often desired by retailers because they can combine pear orders with apples they’re already purchasing from Washington state.
California pear farmers grow these delightful pears on orchards just outside of the Farm to Fork Capital of America, and in doing so embody the local, Farm to Fork movement of the Sacramento community. It is because of this that we encourage Sacramento grocery stores, restaurants, and consumers to buy and support their local farmers and goods at the heart of the America’s Farm-to-Fork movement!
