California Pear Season Kicks Off in Early July
Farmers are on track to begin harvest in early July as the California pear season kicks off in the Sacramento River Delta growing district. With most growers set to begin harvest on July 7 and supplies increasing the week of July 11th, California will have the first and only fresh pears available for sale in grocery stores throughout the U.S.
After several years of late harvests for California pear farmers, people will be happy to see normal harvest timing in early July. This means that the most popular of all pears – the Bartlett – will be ripe and ready to eat for the Summer.
Pear lovers can enjoy fresh pears from California in delicious summertime recipes like Pear Lemon Popsicles, Bartlett Pear and Thyme Sorbet and more. Demand for California pears is strong for both the fresh and canned pears, and growing conditions have been excellent this year to produce a good sized, high-quality crop.

Bartlett pears can simply be ripened at home on the counter where they will turn from green to yellow, like bananas, and become softer, juicier and sweeter. When Bartletts reach the desired level of ripeness, they can be placed in the refrigerator where they will last for several more days. This unique characteristic of Bartlett pears can help shoppers stretch food dollars and reduce food waste, both important benefits in 2022.
